After running an X11 software application (XQuartz 2.3.6, xorg-server 1.4.On 2-apple56) on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8), opening a port in X11, and running xhost + , then I ssh -Y on all my Ubuntu 10.04 VMs (running VMware Fusion). When I call gedit.bashrc (for example) I get:

(gedit:9510):i Gtk-WARNING**: Failed to open display:

But if I use ssh -Y on my Ubuntu 11.04 machine, gedit .bashrc works. $DISPLAY echo returns "localhost: 10.0".

I tried using export DISPLAY=localhost:10.0 when running sshede on my VM and gedit .bashrc but still getting:

    xubuntu cannot open display

(gedit:9625): Gtk WARNING: Failed to start mapping: localhost: 10.0

What could be different in the configuration of the two differences between the two Ubuntu machines that would explain how one works and the other doesn't?

Update: As suggested by Zoredache in the comment below, I ran sudo apt-get buy xbase-clients but the problem remains the same.

For unknown reasons, I have a login loop, I can login via device on the login screen even though I see a message saying That xset definitely can't open a selection. ls -lah | grep -i Xauthority shows my username and maybe even tried export DISPLAY=0 + xset q doesn't help either.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? with Xubuntu 20.04/AMD x64. Everything was fine for several months, I am generally fine, unlike all my drivers.

Edit: systemctl status lightdm.service gives a bunch of errors in images, does anyone know what went wrong?

I'm trying to run xubuntu-desktop on WSL, like all the tutorials offered on many sites. But I can't connect to VcXsrv display because it still shows :

xfce4-session: Open cannot show you: .Type "xfce4-session --help" to use it.
